The 2.0 TDI is a development of the 1.9 block, but had to be done because the 1.9 is a very slow revving engine and won't meet forthcoming regulations in super tuned format hence the slow disappearance of 1.9TDI 130/150 block cars.
Best bet would be to go with mk4 or Mk5 TDI’s (I’m slightly biased) It'd help if you specified 05/06 or 09/10 MK5 due to the different engines. I have a 2009 Jetta and 2011 Audi Q7 and the common rail engines have proven to be pretty great. I have 4. Two 2012 tdi Jetta wagons. A 2012 tdi Passat and an 09 tdi wagon.

Got pissed of about the intake cleaning and modding to prevent it. The TDI is a great car. Pulls strong stock. Will pull a stock 1.8T on a 5th gear roll on from 60 to about 100 or so. The 1.8T is faster car stock pure and simple. The TDI is just a bit of a different driving experience. I have the 1.6 tdi. I like it. I find it gets to speed quite quickly in 3rd and 4th. The 2.0 fr owners though seem to be getting better mpg than me though. It's quite hard to get a high mpg in the 1.6 because it has to work harder to get to speed and has one less gear. I can't offer any advice about swapping a TDi into a Wrangler, BUTdramatic pausehaving been a diesel mechanic for a while as well as having spent several thousand miles behind a TDi, I'd suggest almost anything BUT this engine if you want a diesel. enziK1.
